There are no restrictions to foreigners owning property anywhere in the USA but there are many differences from a European experience. The outline below applies to whether you are considering a new home or a resale.


• Agreement of Sale: Once you have found the property of your dreams, you will make an offer and an agreement of sale will be drawn up, but subject to conditions, such as obtaining a mortgage.

• Costs: The costs involved will vary but 3% to 5% is common. These include fees for inspections, title insurance and stamp taxes.

• Title Insurance: Title insurance protects the buyer of real estate in the case where information was not discovered prior to sale.

• Real Estate Taxes: Real estate taxes in the USA will vary according to where the home is located. These taxes pay for local services and schools and depend on the home's assessed value.
